Aiming for Gold

The World Snowboarding Championships (WSC) is to be held in Oslo February 2012. We talked to Silje Norendal, Rider of the year 2011 at the Norwegian Snowboard Awards and one of Norway’s favored female medalists.

Silje Norendal started snowboarding in her hometown, Kongsberg, with her mom when she was 4 years old. Her mom bought her a snowboard and they started practicing together. Now at only age 18 she is one of Norway’s biggest talents, and remains optimistic with regards to the World Championships.

Norwegians Down Under

“Australia is a country almost exclusively populated by criminals. That is a statement you often hear. Yes, I have often been asked: Do they use knife, fork, plate, and such things in Australia?”

This is how the Norwegian scientist Carl Sofus Lumholtz (1851-1922), who traveled to Australia on an expedition in the 1880s, commented on the popular perception of Australia being a territory of convicts. However, the vast majority of immigrants were in fact free settlers. Among them, a handful of Norwegians. Read how the Norwegians were instrumental in shaping the young nation’s society and culture.
